How can I protect myself when using my car? Some ways you can protect yourself when using your car include:
- check inside and underneath your car before getting in and that the trunk is closed
- if you are using an automatic door opener do not activate it until you are very close to the car as someone could get in one of the other doors
- if you feel someone is following you drive to a police station, gas station or fire station
- do not get out of your car. Use the horn until someone comes to help
- keep a pen, flashlight and paper in your car so you can record the number of anyone following you
- change the routes that you normally use
- consider carrying a cell phone to call police in case of trouble. The police in your area may have a program in partnership with a phone company
