How can I protect myself when using my car?

Some ways you can protect yourself when using your car include:

check inside and underneath your car before getting in and that the trunk is closed
if you are using an automatic door opener do not activate it until you are very close 
to the car as someone could get in one of the other doors
if you feel someone is following you drive to a police station, gas station or fire station
do not get out of your car. Use the horn until someone comes to help
keep a pen, flashlight and paper in your car so you can record the number of anyone 
following you
change the routes that you normally use
consider carrying a cell phone to call police in case of trouble. The police in your area 
may have a program in partnership with a phone company
